Potential Collaboration Between Apple and Meta in Apple’s AI Efforts

Speculation has it that Apple and Meta are in discussions to include Meta’s generative AI model into Apple Intelligence. By taking this strategic step, Apple aims to enhance its AI capabilities and expand people’s choices. This new artificial intelligence technology was supposedly introduced by Apple at WWDC 2024 for use in iPhones and other products, as claimed by the Wall Street Journal. If these discussions pan out, Meta may join OpenAI as Apple’s second AI partner for features and apps.

Meta can benefit greatly from tapping into Apple’s extensive distribution network, which is similar to the App Store. Although Apple was slower to join the generative AI market than some of its rivals, the tech company has developed its own AI models and is now seeking collaborators for heavier lifting.

The Wall Street Journal reports that Apple is reportedly in talks with several artificial intelligence (AI) companies, including Meta, OpenAI, Anthropic, and Perplexity, as well as Google’s Gemini. Users of Apple products may soon be able to choose from a variety of third-party AI models alongside Apple’s own systems, thanks to these potential partnerships.

The potential collaboration here exemplifies the unanticipated nature of collaborations in the age of AI. Supposedly Meta lost $10 billion in 2022 because to Apple’s privacy enhancements from 2021, proving that the two companies have always been rivals. To add to that, Meta has been helping with the 30% service charge that Apple imposes on certain adverts. While discussing AI, it’s worth noting that Apple has refrained from financially pressuring these companies. Instead, AI companies may model their business models after the App Store and charge for premium memberships using Apple Intelligence. No one seems to have figured out how much money these partnerships will save, but they could make AI product distribution better.

When it comes to ChatGPT, OpenAI plans to provide a free version that allows users to connect premium accounts through Apple Intelligence. Despite potential increases of 30–40% in OpenAI’s infrastructure expenses, the agreement anticipates a quadrupling of ChatGPT usage.

A lot of people in the IT industry have been on board with Meta’s AI model Llama since it was introduced in July 2023. The artificial intelligence team at Meta would consider a collaboration with Apple a major win. Speaking at WWDC 2024, Apple’s software division chief Craig Federighi emphasized the need of offering a variety of AI solutions to meet customer requests in fields as diverse as creative writing and medical research.

Talks between Apple and Meta, among other major AI firms like Google and Anthropic, show how serious Apple is about expanding its AI ecosystem. Since various occupations may require varied degrees of AI expertise, Apple aims to provide people with the best AI solutions available, according to Craig Federighi. This action demonstrates a shift in emphasis from developing internal capabilities alone to embracing external AI models.

It is notable that Apple and Meta are considering working together despite their history of conflicts. Meta’s financial line was hit hard by Apple’s privacy upgrades in 2021, which granted consumers greater agency over their data. In response, Meta devised methods to evade Apple’s advertising service fees. The continuing discussions surrounding AI, however, suggest that a reconciliation may be possible, with both parties anticipating benefits from the collaboration.

Although discussions have not yet led to any official collaborations, Apple is open to incorporating other external AI models into its ecosystem. These connections might revolutionize the AI capabilities for iPhone users, offering a choice of advanced tools for various applications.

Working with leading AI developers like Meta might set new standards for tech innovation and user experience, especially as the AI environment evolves. This is Apple’s strategy. Even if these discussions have yet to reach a conclusion, they do highlight the rapidity and uncertainty of AI research and development.
